Global Gag Rule: What You Can Do To Change The Oppressive Legislation

It’s only been a few days since our good-ol’ President Donald Trump has been in office and, with ease, he’s already signing off on some major policies, affecting millions of women across the world.

Now, you may just want to pay attention to and DO something about this! If you haven’t heard, our ‘President’ just reinstated the Global Gag Rule, which was originally implemented by Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Bill Clinton repealed it immediately when he took office. George W. Bush immediately reinstated it when he took office. Then under the Obama administration, it was immediately repealed again over these last 8 years.

In case you’re wondering what the big deal is over the establishment of the Global Gag Rule, its system ensures a federal ban on U.S funding for International health organizations that aid women on any family-planning options that include abortion.

Meaning, effective immediately, any federal money is prevented from being sent to organizations that discuss, let alone perform, abortion services.

So if this is a matter that you feel strongly about, you’re going to need to know how to get involved ASAP.

According to Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, tweeting shortly after Trump’s policy signing,

“The Global Gag Rule, which Donald Trump reinstated today, will put millions of the most vulnerable women around the world at risk.”

Trump signing this executive order is taking away the basic health rights and birth control options of millions of women internationally, which will lead to detrimental consequences in the long run.

Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, stated “this will cause clinic closures around the world” which will result in more unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions.

If one thing is for sure, Trump was not lying about being completely pro-life. Trump has promised to continue to take sweeping actions against abortion, including appointing Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Reinstating this policy is the first indication of how serious he is. A statement from Population Action International (PAI), a global family planning advocacy organization, referred to this reinstatement as “the beginning of the Trump-Pence administration’s agenda to punish women everywhere.”

Isn’t it ironic too how there were hundreds of historical women’s marches around the world on Jan. 21st, we celebrated the 44th anniversary of Roe vs Wade on Jan. 22nd, and then by Jan. 23rd Trump signs off on the Global Gag Rule?

It’s time to wake up and do something about this brutal reality. Just as quickly as Trump is moving, we as a people must stay on guard and move to act with urgency as well.

So please, get involved and here are some options available to you right now to participate in protest efforts to make a real change:

Spread Awareness

Educate yourself on the long-term effects of this policy and get to talking with people about the issues arising. Make sure you explain why it’s important to take action!

Contact Officials

Please, by all means, contact your local and national representatives.

Whether you call, send emails or even write letters, just voice your stance on what you believe is right. Every person counts.

Be Active

Take part in any local or national protests! Share on social media platforms any events or organizations people can join to be a part of the movement.

If you’re ready to make an influence, be courageous enough to do something about it now because in the words of Mahatma Gandhi,

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
