5 Fashion Careers Choices That Don’t Require You To Be A Designer

In the immortal words of Coco Chanel, fashion is more than clothes when she said,

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Fashion is how we express who we are, our growth, our aesthetic, and of course our mood.  Many wonder how do you become a part of such a luxurious industry and make your own mark?

A lot of young people in fashion automatically get discouraged because it feels like you can’t design and think there is no place in the industry for you.

I currently attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and I’m actually not a designer. Shocker, right? I can’t tell you how many times people assumed I was a designer; if I had a dollar for every time I was asked, “Are you an designer?” I would be richer than Bill Gates.

I’m not a designer. I cannot sketch to save my life. I can draw a pretty decent Spongebob but I doubt that counts. Personally, fashion has also been my true passion because it allows you to be yourself without any judgement.

Unfortunately, designing was not an option and I had to search for other meaningful and fun fashion careers. As I am searching for the right career myself, here’s a few careers that can work for those interested in breaking into fashion!

Visual Merchandiser

Have you ever walked pasted Macy’s on 34th Street during the christmas season?

If you have, their magical window display must have caught your eye?

Well, there’s an actual position for individuals who create window displays and store layouts, known as a Visual Merchandiser.  According to Chegg,

A visual merchandiser oversees and coordinates the display exhibits in all parts of a retail store. You decide the theme and feel of a store, then evoke that environment through visual displays.”

If you like to create and rearrange items to look beautiful, this is the job for you. A visual merchandiser has a creative eye and compel consumers to do more than window shop.

Fashion Event Planner

I know what you’re thinking and yes event planners do exist within the fashion industry.

Fashion event planners are individuals to turns a vision for a show or event into reality.

They are the individuals responsible for creating a magical show such as The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and all the pageantry during NY Fashion Week.

A fashion event planner is one of the most vital roles within the fashion industry as they enact the vision of their client.

An event can make or break a brand by displaying that brand’s work or new products.

If you enjoy coordinating and working in a nonstop, fast-paced environment, this career is for you! You never know, you can be the planning a show for Ralph Lauren or Gucci.

Fashion Buyer

My major is Fashion Merchandising and Business Management. I study buying, retail management, product management, and of course advertising and marketing.

I am exposed to all of the business aspects of fashion. One of the most fascinating roles has to be a buyer. A buyer is responsible for purchasing merchandise for a store and projecting what will be the next trend.

A buyer’s job is incredibly difficult and prestigious as you never know what will or will not sell, but that’s the joy of the job.

You are studying the mind of consumers to predict what they want. A buyer is always ten steps ahead of the industry and ten steps ahead of fashion. Could that be you?

Operations Manager

Do you like to be in control? Are you super organized and detailed orientated? Can you handle a massive workload?

If you answered yes to any and all of these questions, you should consider being an operations manager. An operations manager handles and oversees all production of goods and services.

They are responsible for making sure a company is functioning efficiently and meeting the needs of their consumer.

If a company is not running successfully, how will they ever produce any profits?

It is the job of an operation manager to ensure everyone sector of the company is fulfilling their duties. It sounds pretty cool to run to be an operations manager for Prada one day!

Fashion Stylist

I love having a new look everyday, it’s like a new beginning or a different outlet of expression. Clothing expresses your mood or personality. If you have a passion for dressing and coordinating garments, maybe you should be a stylist.

Stylists are responsible for creating fabulous looks for celebrities, magazines, and advertisements. Stylists are visionaries with a passion for creating and expressing a story through clothing. It doesn’t sound too bad being a stylist for Kim K one day?

There are countless careers within the fashion industry, it just takes time to find the perfect one for you. So put down your latest issue of Vogue, stop imagining, and make it happen. Find the fashion career for you!
