Empress Me Spotlight: Sheryl Sandberg

“What would you do if you were not afraid?”

This week’s Empress Me spotlight is on superstar Sheryl Sandberg: COO of Facebook and Author of New York Times bestseller “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead”.

Sheryl Sandberg has a long and very successful career in business, featuring companies such as McKinsey & Company, Google, and Facebook. However, the most impressive aspect of her career is her work to help women.

Sheryl started the Lean In Foundation after the release of her book Lean In in 2015.  The organization involves the three main spheres of community, education, and circles, which are peer groups that meet to share experiences and learn together.  As a part of the community, women learn, inspire, and support each other to succeed in the business world.

Many problems that women in the business world face involve fear.  This fear can be about anything from work life balance and family life to negative stereotypes of what it means to be a ‘working woman’.  The Lean In Foundation changes the conversation from “what we can’t do” to “what we can do”.  By using a positive mantra, Sheryl aims to inspire women to rise above fear and these negative stereotypes to be successful without giving up what is important to them.

In addition to giving advice to women about leadership and development, Sheryl emphasises a call to action.  She encourages women to lean into positions of leadership so that there can be more female voices in positions of power.  However, no one book or female leader is going to make a difference for the unequal female representation in the business world.  Every person has to be dedicated to making a change

Sheryl Sandberg Quotes to be inspired by:

  • “Knowing that things could be worse should not stop us from trying to make them better.”
  • “Taking initiative pays off. It is hard to visualize someone as a leader if she is always waiting to be told what to do.”
  • “We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.”
